Chetak Rumour False - Bajaj won't re-enter Scooter Market
Snapshot: Bajaj rubbishes speculations: Not to re-enter scooter market.
The two wheeler segment continues to grow at a phenomenal rate, this is largely attributed to sales growth in the scooters. Bajaj, which was once a major player in the scooter segment and sold the iconic-Chetak with the tagline “Humara Bajaj” has rubbished a recent rumor of reentry into the scooter market.
According to some reports, the manufacturer has re-registered the brand name - Chetak as it prepares to grab the share of the ever-growing scooter market. Some reports suggest that the Bajaj would re-launch the Chetak at the 2016 Auto Expo with a four-stroke DTS-i engine. However, the managing director of Bajaj Auto, Rajiv Bajaj, states that the company’s plan is to focus only on motorcycles and it does not have an intention to return to its older business of manufacturing scooters.
The credibility of the news can be argued considering that the sales number for Bajaj Auto has dropped by 15.6 percent to 1.77 million units in the last financial year despite the overall market growth which was registered at 8.1 percent. The manufacturer dropped to fourth position and now stands in ranking after Hero Motocorp, Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) and TVS.
The manufacturer continues to diversify its Pulsar range. The AS 150 and the AS 200 are two latest bike models that were introduced by the manufacturer and aims to sell besides all other existing models.
