Chevrolet’s compact sedan, the Essentia that made its presence at the 2016 Auto Expo has been spotted for the first time on Indian streets. The car was spotted on the streets of Pune wrapped with heavy camouflage, where the car was spied taking test round, ahead of its launch that is expected by next year. It is based on the next-gen Chevrolet Beat hatchback that has already made its spy news several times.
Both the compact sedan Essentia and the next-generation hatchback Beat also get some traces of its current model’s platform. Though, at the time of launch General Motors India did not announce any of the specification details of the models and just stated that it will carry 5 occupants and luggage “without any compromise to style”.
Inside the Chevrolet Essentia, you will see an updated version of the motorcycle-inspired instrument cluster seen on the current Beat and has an analogue speedometer with LCD/LED display for the tachometer, odometer, tripmeter and other driver information systems. And some of the confirmed features are touchscreen Chevrolet MyLink2 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto technologies, dual airbags, ABS and a reverse camera.
You can expect it to run in both petrol and diesel fuel options. The petrol variant could be a 1.2-litre SMARTECH engine with 76 bhp and 106 Nm of peak torque, while the diesel version will be powered by a 1.0-litre SMARTECH mill that can make a 56 bhp and 142 Nm of torque. The engine will be paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
When launched, the Essentia will compete with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, Honda Amaze and the Tata Zest with an expected price range of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh (Ex showroom).
