Snapshot: The BMW 5 series sedan, which was one of the most awaited car models of the year by the German automobile giant, packs a world of whole new features and technology on board. The design and styling, though similar to the outgoing version, is sharper than ever.

The BMW 5 series, which received major upgrades which was in line with the latest 7 series sedans, made an international debut back in October this year. After being on sale on a global arena, BMW India has now confirmed that this model will soon find its place in the Indian market and will be available next year, 2017.

The BMW 5 series sedan, which was one of the most awaited car models of the year by the German automobile giant, packs a world of whole new features and technology on board. The design and styling, though similar to the outgoing version, is sharper than ever. The meticulously carved headlamps are flown into the kidney grille, while the diligently planned grille slats close whenever needed, thus complementing the aerodynamics greatly. The sharp tail light and the longer wheelbase are the other changes that this version has undergone.

Under the elongated bonnet, there is a 2.0-litre petrol or diesel engine, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission gearbox. On xDrive mode, the vehicle is expected to hit the 0-100-km/h in just 6.2 seconds. However, the Indian version of this car is expected to get the rear wheel drive version. Other features include traffic jam assistance and active lane keeping assistance which will add on the the semi-autonomous attributes of the car.

The next generation BMW 5 series sedans has a more agile frame, thanks to the new body chassis. The overall kerb weight has been reduced by 62-kg by using a strong amalgamation of steel, magnesium and aluminium. However, even with a decreased body weight, this luxury sedan gets an increased overall size amounting to 30.5-mm in length, 7.6-mm in width and 15.1-mm height.

Post its arrival on the Indian shores, the new model of BMW 5 series is expected to give a good competition to the Audi A6 and the all new Mercedes Benz E-Class.
