Datsun to stop production in Indonesia and Russia.
India will continue to be a significant production center for Datsun.
Nissan plans to start Datsun production in Pakistan very soon.
Nissan is planning to withdraw the production of the Datsun from the entire South-East Asian market and Russia. It makes India the only country in this region to continue producing the Datsun for domestic and export purposes. Nissan has also announced that it will start producing the Datsun models in Pakistan very soon.
The Datsun brand was revived in July 2013 by Nissan which was at the time headed by Carlos Ghosn. The plan was to launch Datsun as a brand for emerging markets like India and other countries around the globe. However, the re-introduction of the brand started creating problems for the parent company, Nissan.
Secondly, the Carlos Ghosn scandal precipitated matters further, thereby making it more challenging for Datsun to re-establish itself as a successful brand. Therefore, the discontinuation of the model became inevitable.
Sources state that the situation in Indonesia was such that the company was trying to promote multiple mainstream brands, especially when the market share was as low as one percent. The situation was somewhat similar in other countries like Russia, India, and South Africa.
Therefore, the company planned to pull out the Datsun from Indonesia and Russia after the management shuffle that saw Makoto Uchida taking over from Hiroto Saikawa as the Chief Executive Officer of Nissan from November 30, 2019.
Despite pulling out of the Datsun from SE Asia and Russia, India will see the introduction of a sub-4-meter Datsun SUV very soon in 2020.
