DSK Motowheels came into limelight in the automobile industry when they acquired the Korean bike maker, Hyosung, from the Garware industries, back in 2012. Since the acquisition, DSK Hyosung has posted some very good sales figures, launching bikes in the vacant market segments of 250 cc and 650cc categories. Now the reports are flying in that the DSK group is in talks with the famous Italian motorcycle manufacturer, Benelli, to bring the brand to India.
The Italian bike manufacturer is a decade old company and went through many ups and downs, before settling in the hands of China based Qianjiang (Q.J.) corporation. The current portfolio of the Benelli includes motorcycles ranging from 300cc to 1131cc. Some of the famous models include, Benelli BN302, a sporty looking, parallel twin, 300cc engine-powered street naked motorcycle producing 36bhp of power, Benelli’s four-cylinder, 600cc, BN series bikes, the 898cc triple-cylinder ‘bug eyed’ TNT899, and 1131cc, three-cylinder engine-powered TNT1130R, a 155 BHP Superbike.
Coming on to DSK, it is being spearheaded by Shirish Kulkarni, who is an avid motorcyclist himself and wants to change the super-biking scene in India. DSK currently manufactures the bikes in the manufacturing plant located in Satara, Maharashtra. If the deal goes on, the DSK-Benelli will join the league of TVS-BMW and Bajaj-KTM and will help DSK name sit high among the major players as Benellis is one of the oldest manufacturer of Italy.
Although, DSK will try to bring each and every bike of Benelli to India, one of the most potential offerings here can be the Benelli BN302. This 300cc naked motorcycle produces 36 BHP and can give a tough competition to the likes of the KTM 390, Ninja and forthcoming Bajaj 400cc bike. Although we may have to wait for the official news, the sources say that the deal is pretty near to closure now.
