If there is one motorcycle that is known for its sheer bonkers attitude then it has got to be the KTM 690 Duke. The 690 Duke has all the ingredients to be a hooligan that it reveres in being, with a fair amount of power wedged into a relatively light package it is a perfect recipe for fun on two wheels. So when we found out that KTM will be updating our favourite single cylinder on the planet, we got excited for all the right reasons. Just revealed at EICMA 2015, the 2016 model year update see the KTM 690 Duke learn some refinement lessons to go with its hooligan image with the refinement coming largely because of an engine overhaul that softens the buzz from the motor, and adds power to the already powerful single cylinder.
All this increase in power and better refinement comes from the addition of a secondary balancing shaft, a new crankshaft, and lighter pistons and connecting rods to the LC4 690cc engine that powers the Duke. All these changes come with a new cylinder head that has the exhaust valves on roller rockers, and the intake valves on the camshaft. All this mechanical wizardry results in the 2016 KTM 690 Duke getting a sweet power gain – a 73hp peak horsepower figure and at to it a power band that is 1,000 rpm wider than before, meaning there is more hooligan in this refinement.
With all above KTM has also added to the 690 Duke a ride-by-wire throttle, with three riding modes, a slipper clutch, traction control, ABS, and motor slip regulation, and with this KTM presents you with one utterly insane motorcycle. Above all this insanity there exists an even more fun KTM 690 Duke R which gets the three ride modes are being offered (sport, street and rain) as standard while the regular 690 buyers could upgrade their bikes with a “Track Pack” featuring the ride modes.
