EICMA 2015 - Benelli Unleashes TRK 502 - Looks Tailor made for India!

Snapshot: is this the bike India has been waiting for ever since?

This is what we have been waiting for! For motorcycle manufacturers to understand the need of the market and to have motorcycles in their portfolio which ply in all possible segments and yet have specs that should mean that they don't cost a bomb to make and thus to sell. Now, it seems Benelli has become the first brand among the global ones to understand that you need products in and around 500cc mark that suit the South Asian market, products that have rugged and go anywhere attitude and which cost (hoping they do) not much to buy and to maintain.

Benelli has revealed TRK 502, an Adventure Tourer that looks as if it was made specifically for our sort of a market. It would be a right thing to say the TRK 502 is probably the most interesting motorcycle from Indian market perspective which has been unveiled at EICMA 2015. Joining the Benelli line up with its bigger sibling Trek 1130 Amazonas to extended Benelli’s touring/adventure product line-up. Where the Amazonas is bigger and expensive, the TRK 502 in its tourer and adventure avatar, is aimed to cater to a wider range of riders wanting to explore the terrain but are seeking a more affordable and accessible bike.

Look at the Benelli TRK 502 and its touring/off-roading intentions are clearly visible through its ADV design. The bike gets a dual headlight with a high beak fairing and a windscreen that should take care of most of win blast and insects hoping to make a mess of your riding gear aesthetics.  To add to the rugged look and functionality to the bike, the levers are equipped with knuckle guards on the handlebar, add to this a ground clearance of a whopping 230mm (with a skip plate) and you have one perfect bike to go searching for your solitude.

There is a 20 liter fuel tank that should be good enough for your long hauls away from civilization, while the size of the bike to seem to suggest you will get enough space to move around on the seat thus is expected be comfortable enough for the riders. The seat which is step up should also be comfortable for the pillion and there is ample space to tag in your luggage too. At launch Benelli is expected to offer a off-road spec version which will be equipped with spoked wheels instead of alloys.

Benelli Leoncino - the Scrambler sibling of the TRK 502!!

There is a trellis frame made of steel doing duty on the TRK 502 which is powered by a 499.6cc liquid cooled, twin-cylinder fuel injected engine, the engine also gets dual camshafts and 4 valve per cylinder, thus is expected to be smooth and vibration free.  The Power output from the engine is also suitable to our sort of riding atmosphere with the engine producing 47 bhp@8500rpm while an impressive torque rating of 45Nm peaks at 4500rpm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox with hydraulic clutch.

Dual disks brakes with 320mm diameter handle the braking at the front while a two-piston floating calliper single disk which 260mm in diameter does duty at the rear. The Bike comes shod with Pirelli Angel tires with the front being 120/70-17 and a 160/60-17 doing duty at the rear and the wheels will be alloys for the touring version. The off-road spec TRK 502, will be a more dedicated version and will get spoke wheels with a 19-inch diameter at the front and a 17-inch diameter one at the rear. The enduro version will get knobbies designed my Metzeler. Benelli has given the bike a fairly decent suspension travel of 6 inches at the front.

Though Benelli is tight lipped about this products launch in India right now, but expect to see a production ready model at the 2016 AutoExpo and a launch of the same around the middle part of 2016, just before the beginning of the touring season. We reckon DSK-Benelli has a brilliant product in their hands and it would be a incredible bike for Indian masses if DSK Motowheels can price this below or around the 4.5 lakhs ex-showroom mark!
