Union road and transport minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari said this move has been taken in order to encourage people across the country to opt for electric vehicles. While this move comes as a significant step for the promotion of green mobility in India, these distinctive licence plates will help the electric vehicles to be identified easily. Also, those vehicles will receive preferential treatment for parking, free entry in congested areas. Apart from that, there would be toll concession for the EVs.
Indian government has been advocating for the introduction of green mobility across the country for quite some time. The government is also mulling plan to exempt the electric vehicles from permit to make the buying process for such vehicles easier. Meanwhile the government plans to allow youths within the age bracket of 16-18 years to ride electric scooters.
Mr. Gadkari also said that the government could mandate the taxi operators across India to have a certain percentage of electric vehicles in their fleet. In that case, every year the taxi aggregators have to maintain one percent of their vehicle fleet as EVs from 2020 onwards. The government believes, such moves will significantly bring down the pollution level across India.
