Only a couple of weeks back, Suzuki announced that the YRA premium hatchback will be named Baleno and will make its global debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show 2015. And now, one of our in-house staff has spied the hatchback, based on the iK-2 concept, testing in the national capital region of Delhi. Camouflaged heavily, the Baleno has been spied a couple of times before also.
While the Baleno nameplate is officially announced for the global markets, we are not sure of it will be called the same in India, for Maruti has already used the name for an erstwhile sedan. With the growing interest of Maruti in the premium products in India, YRA will be sold exclusively through Nexa dealerships alongside the S-Cross crossover and will be placed above the popular Swift hatchback.
Suzuki Baleno will also mark the debut of the company's newly-developed 1.0-litre BOOSTERJET petrol motor. While the specs of the motor are not yet revealed, we know that it will be a frugal engine, offering a good performance and torque, thanks to a turbocharger. This engine will also be offered with the India-spec model of the Baleno, along with other standard petrol and diesel motors.
While Suzuki has already announced that, "The new Baleno will be launched in the UK early next Summer", India launch could happen in the second half of 2016. Though, Maruti will most likely showcase the YRA at the 2016 Auto Expo. Maruti Suzuki is also working on a sub 4-meter SUV (codenamed YBA) and it will also be launched in 2016.
Once launched, the Maruti Suzuki YRA will compete against the likes of the Hyundai Elite i20 and Honda Jazz under the premium hatchback category. Maruti Suzuki could price the hatchback from Rs 5.5 Lakhs - Rs 9 Lakhs.
