F1 report - Nico Rosberg wins intense Belgian Grand Prix

Snapshot: The Belgian GP suffered a 17 minute red flag stoppage after a heavy accident of Renault's Kevin Magnussen.

The recent Belgian GP in the 2016 season of Formula 1 was filled with incidents and accidents. Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg won the Belgian GP, followed by Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo on the second spot and Mercedes' second driver, Lewis Hamilton on the third spot, fighting his way up after starting from the back row of the grid.

The race started badly as Max Verstappen crashed his Red Bull into Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel. All the three cars were damaged as Verstappen lost his front wing, Raikkonen sustained a puncture and wing damage, while Vettel also faced problems with the front wing. This led to a furious outburst from Raikkonen, who ridiculed Verstappen's driving and labelled it as 'ridiculous'. Verstappen denied the allegations and said, "It's a big lie. I was defending my position – if someone doesn't like it that's their problem."

Nevertheless, the race continued, only to be disrupted again by a major incident that put the race under red flag and caused a 17 minute delay. Renault's Kevin Magnussen lost control of his car and ended up in Joylon Palmer's tail. This resulted in a huge impact and the Dane spun out into the barriers. While he was able to walk, he was later taken to the hospital for precautionary check and a cut on the left ankle.

Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg finished fourth, again missing out on the maiden podium finish. His team mate Sergio Perez from Force India finished fifth, followed by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel sixth place finish, who suffered a scuffle with Verstappen as explained above. McLaren's Fernando Alonso, who started last on the grid, finished a superb seventh.

Williams' Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas were eighth and tenth respectively, while Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari, who was also involved in the triple car crash, finished ninth, hence completing the top 10 of the Belgian GP. This is the Rosberg's sixth victory of the year, the 20th of his career, and his first at Spa-Francorchamps. But for everyone else, the race turned out to be an ill-tempered affair.

In the championship points table, the world champion is lead by Lewis Hamilton sitting with 232 points to Rosberg’s 223 and Ricciardo’s 151. On the constructor's table, there hasn't been a change, apart from the Force India's brilliant performance. With the 22 point gain, they have a total of 103 points and now sits at the fourth spot ahead of Williams who have 101 points.
