FIA approves provisional 2016 F1 calendar

Snapshot: The biggest change came in the form of the addition of the new race track - Baku - for the 2016 season.

FIA - Federation International de l'Automobile, the governing body for all the international motorsports events across the globe met recently at the Mexico City to finalize the changes for the 2016 racing calendar. The center of talk was the most famous Formula One championship and the biggest change came in the form of the addition of the new race track - Baku - for the 2016 season.

Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan will become the 21st racing ground for the next season. The Baku race will serve during the European round of the F1 season, though the country is officially not a member of the European Union. Azerbaijan was part of the former Soviet republic and is part of the broader Council of Europe, and is at the center of the geographical divide between Europe and Asia.

The championship will follow the tradition and start from the Australia, though it has been moved back to April instead of March. Apart from the few other changes, the British GP has also been shifted to avoid clashing with the Tennis championship, Wimbledon. Also, the German GP is slated to return next year, though, will it be held at Hockenheim or the Nürburgring or somewhere else is yet to be announced.

We are disheartened to see that India is not included in the list, considering that the agreement spanning 5 years is over the next year. But it seems like the conflict between the organizers and the government is not over yet. We are still hopeful considering this is a provisional list, but chances of India making it to the final calendar is very feeble as most of the races are tightly packed and almost finalized.

Decisions were also taken for the various other motorsport events like the Formula E, World Rally Championship, Le Mans, FIA World Endurance Championship and United SportsCar Championship. Like in the WRC, the power has been increased to 380 hp and certain design changes, while in the Formula E, new circuits has been included. Certain rules to obtain the Super License for racing internationally has also been tweaked.
