Fiat India has officially confirmed the launch of Abarth Punto hatchback on October 19, 2015 in the country. It would be second vehicle with Abarth badging in India, after the 595 Competizione. Fiat Abarth Punto would be locally manufactured at the company's production facility in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra. The bookings for the hatch have already started at company authorized dealerships at Rs. 50,000. For those asking, Abarth Punto was unveiled at the launch of 595 Competizione in August 2015 at the Buddh International Circuit.
Abarth Punto would get an array of cosmetic changes over the standard model. The Abarth badged hatch would be more sportier in appearance, but it has resulted in a ground clearance lower than 20mm as compared to the Fiat Punto. As for sporty elements, the hatch would have Scorpion-shaped alloy wheels, sporty decals, and Abarth badging in place of Fiat badges. The cabin would be identical to the range-topping variant of Fiat Punto, save for a couple of subtle changes. It is being learnt through sources that Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and dual front airbags would be offered as standard safety features. The braking system would also be updated, alongside the tweaked suspension setup.
Under the hood, the Abarth Punto would have a 1.4L, 4-cylinder, turbocharged T-Jet petrol engine. This engine would develop a maximum power of 145bhp and peak torque performance of 211Nm. It would be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, in all likelihood. Abarth Punto would rival the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI, while attracting a sticker price of Rs. 10 Lakh (Ex. Showroom). Fiat has already announced that it would also bring the Abarth version of Avventura crossover in the starting months of 2016. In fact, the Abarth Avventura has already been spied several times on Indian roads, and it clearly hints that it could arrive sooner than expected.
