According to a reliable source, Passion Auto Italy, the successor for Fiat Punto for the European market could be announced by November. There are further affirmations that confirm the introduction of the hatchback in the form of a leaked product roadmap of a German OEM supplier by a Facebook page called “Alfa Romeo Project 950”.
This expected model won’t be a new Punto as the Italian company, Fiat, has confirmed that a new version of the car is not in the works. However, it will be a new B-segment hatchback and will be placed under the Tipo hatchback. It is rumoured that this new hatchback could be based on the company’s X6H platform which underpins the Argo as well. However, it won’t be just a revamped version of the Argo, but instead, may borrow a lot of those styling elements from the Tipo.
For the European market, the new Fiat Punto successor will be competing against similar cars like the Volkswagen Polo, Nissan Micra and the Seat Ibiza. Hence, it may be designed with better features that will be more focused on comfort, convenience and safety. It may even have a higher crash protection which could have a 4-star or a 5-star NCAP rating.
As for the mechanism, the new Fiat hatchback will be having the company popular engine lineup which includes the FireFly and would be produced at the plant in Poland (Bielsko-Biala). The Firefly motor is presently found in the Brazilian Argo, comprising of the 1.3-litre and the 1.0-litre motors. However, the sportier model is powered by a bigger 1.8-litre four-cylinder TorQ engine.
The sales of the new Fiat Punto successor would start from 2018 for the European market only. In India, the company sells the Fiat Punto Evo in the lower price bracket (starting from Rs. 4.88 lakhs for the Pure variant). It comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre diesel engine. The diesel motor comes in two states of tuning, on making 75 bhp power while the other having 90 bhp.
