It was only a few days ago when Fiat unveiled the brand new Toro double cab pickup truck and now we get to see how the utilitarian model would look like if turned into an SUV. The attached digital illustration represents the work of “The Really Johnny” and it’s actually not a bad effort as we can see this becoming a production car to effectively replace the Fiat Freemont.
While the Freemont is nothing more than just a rebadged Dodge Journey, the Toro pickup and consequently this potential SUV version ride on the small wide 4x4 architecture developed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The pickup is 4.91 meters long while this possible SUV conversion should have roughly the same size, albeit the wheelbase could be a tad longer as such a model would have to be spacious enough to enable a seven-seat layout.
It remains to be seen whether Fiat does indeed have plans for a Toro SUV which would certainly make sense taking into account the Freemont has been on sale for more than four years and it’s in dire need of a replacement, especially since it’s based on an old platform. An affordable SUV from Fiat India would certainly make sense in our country, but it’s too early to tell whether the company actually has plans to launch such a model.
Until then, the Fiat Toro double cab pickup truck will go on sale in Latin America and will have to face some stiff competition coming from a new entry in this segment, the Renault Duster Oroch which is actually based on the Romanian off-roader, the Dacia Duster SUV. The Toro pickup will be offered with 1.8 16v E-Torq Flex engine and a 2.0 16v Multijet turbodiesel, with the former only available with a 4x2 layout while the latter can be had with 4x4 and even a latest generation nine-speed automatic transmission.
It will go on sale before the year’s end or early 2016, but details concerning a possible India launch are not available at this point although it’s unlikely it will be sold in our country.
