Mahindra is all over the automotive news world for the past couple of years and because of the right reasons. Be it the decision to join high ranking motorsports series like Formula E or Moto GP3 (two-wheeler racing), or be it the acquisition and investments in big brands like the Korean SUV manufacturer Ssangyong and Italian car designer Pininfarina.
Acquired in late 2015, the Pininfarina immediately started working in sync with Mahindra & Mahindra and soon they revealed the XUV Aero Concept at the Auto Expo along with launching the TUV300 compact SUV, a product Pininfarina worked on. And now it seems Mahindra is utilizing the skill set of the legendary design house to change the rules of motorsports.
Mahindra Racing and Pininfarina have released a set of three concept designs for what seems like the future of the Formula E racing cars. While manufacturers from the Formula 1 come up such futuristic designs time to time, it's the first time someone came up with such an idea for the Formula E cars and since this championship is in a very nascent stage, we can't blame anyone for this.
What we can actually do is praise Mahindra and Pininfarina for their collaborative and creative project that will surely bring awareness and excitement for this energy efficient form of motorsports. These images follow the recent tender by the FIA Formula E to design and manufacture the chassis that will be used from season five onwards.
Chief Creative Officer of Pininfarina Fabio Filippini commented: “Formula E is one of the most exciting signs of the changes underway in the automotive world as well as in motor racing. Its success is the proof. Exercising our creativity on these sketches allowed us to imagine the evolution of this formula. A possible contribution of Pininfarina to the future development of a Formula E car would be a highly motivating challenge, fully consistent with our mission of creators and innovators in the automotive field”.
Mahindra is working hard on creating a credible Electric Vehicle base in India as well as abroad. Their effort in this direction led to the purchase of Maini Cars, known for Reva EV, the only indigenous electric vehicle in India. The outcome was Mahindra e2O, a product well accepted across the globe. Mahindra soon put their own team to race at the Formula E to showcase their commitment towards EVs.
Anand Mahindra, the Chairman of the Mahindra Group echoed the same thoughts during the occasion and said that Mahindra is a pioneer in EV technology and keeps on pushing boundaries to get the best out of this new form of mobility. He added that the participation in Formula E championship gives them a global platform to co-create Future of Mobility.
As for the Pininfarina, the Italian design house joined the Mahindra Group in 2015 after signing an investment agreement with Tech Mahindra. Their design credentials are well known and after working with Ferrari and other major companies, they are all set to excite the Indian audience as well as racing enthusiasts.
