What's the maximum number of cars built by any manufacturer across the globe? 500 Million is the answer and General Motors has just become the first manufacture to reach this milestone. General Motors took almost took over a century to build these many vehicles, but the production figures are "the most of any automaker by far."
General Motors, as opposed to most of the manufacturers, who proudly present the milestone vehicle, refused to identify its 500 millionth car. Present on the occasion were GM CEO Mary Barra and GM North America President Alan Batey who celebrated the milestone by awarding Iraqi war veterans. Also, Purple Heart recipient Trent Brining was awarded a brand new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.
The company also used the occasion to highlight their key innovations, besides celebrating the production milestone. The innovations include the first V8 engine, the first automatic transmission and the first air bags in a production vehicle. GM has always been on the forefront of technological innovations and given many firsts to the world.
General Motors, once the biggest automobile conglomerates across the globe suffered huge losses during the 2008 financial meltdown. They had to declare bankruptcy and sell-off many of umbrella brands. Once the largest producer of cars on an annual basis, GM was overtaken by Toyota and Volkswagen in annual production numbers.
GM, in India, sells one brand, Chevrolet, which has yet to see much success in the country. The American autogiant has big plans for coming years and will launch the Trailblazer SUV in 2015.
