General Motors has revealed a new 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, intended to power the company's compact cars in the future. This interesting development is based on GM's 'ECOTEC' (Emissions Control Optimisation TEChnology) platform that has already been featured on large capacity engines from the same family. The new lightweight engine churns out the power in two different set of tune, 85 BHP and 115 BHP, while the torque output is 165 Nm for both versions which is available from 1800-4700 RPM.

Along with low Co2 emissions of just 99 g/km, the new engine is capable of delivering 23.45 kmpl mileage under European test conditions. Being a 3-cylinder motor, the engine is very compact sized and also features start/stop, variable valve timing, a counter-rotating balance shaft to absorb vibrations, integrated exhaust manifold within the cylinder head, a low-inertia water-cooled turbocharger and a switchable water pump. For the very first time, the new power plant will be featured on the Opel Adam which is due to be showcased at Geneva Motor Show next month.

The Adam will go on sale in international markets soon after its debut at the mega auto show. Talking about the Indian market, we can expect the new engine to power Chevrolet's upcoming compact SUV, ‘Adra,’ unveiled at the recently held Auto Expo 2014. The ‘Adra’ will compete against the likes of Ford ‘EcoSport’ whose 1.0-litre ‘EcoBoost’ engine gathered several awards last year. Interestingly, the 1.0-litre 'EcoTec' has similar mechanical roots as Ford's ‘EcoBoost’ engine. And, if the new engine succeeds to meet out the market expectations in a similar way as the ‘EcoBoost’ did, it will certainly make the company's foothold strong in the entry level SUV segment.
