Hamilton equals Senna with Suzuka GP win

Snapshot: With the victory at the Suzuka, Japan, Lewis Hamilton has joined Senna's 41 victory tally in F1.

Lewis Hamilton, with his win in Italy, moved just next to the legendary Ayrton Senna, who won 41 races in his lifetime. Hamilton was hoping to equal the record at the Singapore GP, which sadly, didn't end up too well for the Briton. And the world champion didn't take much time to equal the record, and with the victory at the Suzuka, Lewis Hamilton has joined Senna's 41 victory tally.

Given the fact that the great Brazilian won all his three championship titles in Suzuka, the victory of Hamilton becomes even more special. While the pole at the qualifying was gained by his team mate Nico Rosberg, it was Hamilton who never looked back and won a comfortable race, ahead of Rosberg and previous race winner Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

Ferrari's other driver, Kimi Raikkonen finished fourth ahead of Williams’ Valtteri Bottas. Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth in his Force India, followed by the Lotus' duo Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado, who finished seventh and eighth respectively. Both the Toro Rossos driver Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz finished ninth and tenth to complete the top ten.

This is Hamilton’s third victory in Japan and he now sits at 277 points, ahead of team mate Nico Rosberg who now has 229 points in his kitty. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel is in the third spot with 218 points, and could undercut Rosberg, given the fact that there are still five races left in the 2015 season. On the constructors' front, Mercedes is leading with 506 points while Ferrari is in a distant second with 337 points.

Lewis Hamilton said, "I’m so happy right now. The team has done a fantastic job this weekend. I had a great start. Thanks again to the team for working so hard to make sure we get good starts this race. For me to come here to a race where I used to love watching Ayrton drive and to match his wins… yeah, I can’t really describe it, it doesn’t really feel real at the moment."
