Hamilton inches closer to championship win with a win at the Hungary GP

Snapshot: Lewis Hamilton has outpaced his team mate Nico Rosberg to take the lead at the championship table with a win at the Hungary GP.

It seemed like inevitable and like the previous couple of season, after trailing for the first half of a season, Lewis Hamilton has finally taken a lead in the 2016 championship. Lewis Hamilton now heads the driver standings for the first time this year after he outpaced his teammate Nico Rosberg in the Hungary GP held at Budapest.

While Rosberg started from the pole looking for a victory, it was the Brits day at the Hungaroring, who took a six point advantage over Nico. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo joined the Mercedes' duo on the podium. Red Bull managed to keep Ferrari on the bay and got a podium, while Sebastian Vettel managed to secure a fourth spot finish.

More than the podium itself, the real battle was going on for the fifth spot between Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen. The tense and lengthy battle between the second Red Bull-Ferrari was won by Max Verstappen, who secured a fifth position ahead of Kimi Raikkonen's sixth spot. But the battle managed to grab some bitter eyeballs.

After the race, Raikkonen said, “It’s not my decision to decide if it was correct or not, but I’ve seen people penalised for much less." He added, “I’m disappointed because I couldn’t get past him. But the car was behaving well, I had good speed, but it’s not the easiest place to get past.”

Verstappen denied any wrongdoing, “I only moved once. It would be very strange if I get penalised I think. I could see him coming so he was very optimistic to dive up the inside. He locked up and hit the rear of my car, which can happen.”

McLaren's Fernando Alonso took a distant seventh spot, followed by Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz at the eighth spot, Williams’ Valtteri Bottas at the ninth spot and Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg at the tenth spot, completing the top ten of the 2016 Hungary GP.

With this win, Hamilton now stands at 192 points, six points ahead of Nico Rosberg’s 186. Daniel Ricciardo also managed to jump the table with 115 points and now sits at the third spot ahead of Raikkonen's 114 point and Vettel's 110. In the constructors’ stakes, Mercedes have 378 points, Ferrari 224 and Red Bull 223.
