Hamilton wins Austrian GP as Rosberg crashes in the last lap

Snapshot: Rosberg is under investigation for an uncalled move that caused him the podium at the Austrian GP.

It was a usual and calm race at the Austrian GP 2016 with Nico Rosberg leading the pack most of time, until a mistake costed him both the podium finish and an inquiry. In a gripping race, Lewis Hamilton snubbed his team mate Nico Rosberg in the very last lap after a brief contact between both the Mercedes'. Rosberg's car suffered a front wing damage, and he eventually finished 4th.

The incident lead to an investigation by the FIA, to which Mercedes replied that the Rosberg's car suffered a brake-by-wire system malfunction in the penultimate lap. Nevertheless, Rosberg is still waiting for the outcome of the investigation. "I'm gutted. That's sport sometimes, but unbelievable," Rosberg said. "I was sure to win, I lost in the last lap - pretty intense. We were battling, and I was struggling a bit with my brakes and tyres degrading, and that gave Lewis a chance.

"Nevertheless I was confident I could defend accordingly - I had the inside line. I went a bit deep into the corner but that's okay, I dictate, but I was very surprised Lewis turned in. I'm frustrated about losing the win like that - I was out front, felt great and was going to win the race," added Rosberg, blaming Hamilton to be responsible for his loss.

Moving on, Verstappen reaped the benefits of the incident and finished at the second spot, another superb takeaway for him. Behind him was Ferrari's Raikkonen who is being asked by Ferrari's bosses to prove his worth for extending the contract. The Finn's partner and 4-time world champion, Sebastian Vettel didn't finish the race due to a crash.

Verstappen team mate in Red Bull managed to secure the fifth spot for him ahead of Jenson Button driving his McLaren Honda. Romain Grosjean took seventh for Haas despite a five-second time penalty for pit-lane speeding. Carlos Sainz did a commendable job securing few points for Toro Rosso as he finished eighth ahead of Valtteri Bottas' Williams. Pascal Wehrlein score a hugely valuable point for Manor - and the first of his F1 career.

With this win, Hamilton now sits at 142 points, still 11 points behind Nico Rosberg. Sebastian Vettel slipped further down as he failed to finish and now shares the third spot with Kimi Raikkonen with 96 points each.

Team Mercedes is leading the constructor's race with Ferrari lagging far behind, followed by team Red Bull.
