Hamilton wins Russian GP as Rosberg retires

Snapshot: Hamilton surpassed the Ayrton Senna's record of winning 41 GPs in Sochi, as his pole-sitting team mate at the team Mercedes retires from the throttle problem, early in the race.

Russia can be many things, but it is certainly not usual. And our favorite motorsports event was not untouched with this unusual appeal of Russia. Hosting the F1 race in Sochi, where the last winter Olympics held, Russia saw an unusual turn of events during the race, which was won by current championship leader, Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton surpassed the Ayrton Senna's record of winning 41 GPs in Sochi, as his pole-sitting team mate at the team Mercedes retires from the throttle problem, early in the race. Nico Rosberg, earlier clinched the pole position from Hamilton and started the race from the front. Soon after entering the 7th lap, he faced throttle issues and had to retire.

Sebastian Vettel, driving his Ferrari, clung to the opportunity and took the runner-up spot, with a dramatic entry of Sergio Perez in the third position, driving his Sahara Force India F1 car. This podium position for team Force India came after ages, and they were ecstatic about the win. He had a tense final lap clash with William's Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

While Bottas couldn't finish the race, his team mate at Williams, Felipe Massa finished fourth and the Finnish took the fifth spot. This was the home race for Daniil Kvyat, who finished sixth driving his Red Bull, ahead of Sauber’s Felipe Nasr and Lotus’s Pastor Maldonado. Both the McLarens managed to finish among the top ten, with Jenson Button ninth and Fernando Alonso tenth, hence completing the top ten.

With four more races to go, 100 points are still up for the grabs. But watching the championship table, It's hard to say that the title will move in some other direction. Hamilton has a 73 point advantage over his team mate Rosberg, while a healthy 66 point gap over Vettel. On the constructors' front, team Mercedes is a healthy 166 points ahead of Ferrarileading with 531 points.

Hamilton earleier said, “Everyone was in the same position today with the limited practice. I didn’t get a hooked-up lap together but Nico did, so well done to him. It’s going to be a long race tomorrow though, so hopefully I might have a chance. There’s a long run down to Turn Two, so we’ll both be studying the line to take tonight. Maybe I can get a good start, we’ll see. We haven’t done a lot of laps, so I’m not really sure what our pace is like compared to the others. Our goal in the race as always is to finish well for the team, so we’ll be trying to do that.”
