Hamilton wins the season opener F1 race in Melbourne

Snapshot: It was a Mercedes show altogether at the first race of the season with Mercedes getting both first and second spot on the podium.

And the 2015 season just took off from where it left in 2014 - Lewis Hamilton winning the season opener at the Australian Grand Prix held on Sunday in Melbourne. It was a Mercedes show altogether at the first race of the season with Mercedes getting both first and second spot on the podium. The high drama game saw only 11 cars finish the race.

While Lewis Hamilton came first and Nico Rosberg second, it was Sebastian Vettel, who seemed satisfied to bring the Ferrari on the podium after long in his debut with the Italian supercar manufacturer. Williams’ Felipe Massa took the fourth position ahead of star rookie Felipe Nasr, who was driving Sauber and gave them their first points since 2013.

Even before the race started, Williams’ Valtteri Bottas was ruled out due to a back injury, while the Marussia having failed to qualify, only 15 cars started the race. Out of 15 cars also, McLaren’s Kevin Magnussen, Red Bull’s Daniel Kvyat and Max Verstappen's exit due to car failures en route to the grid and Pastor Maldonado's accident led only 11 cars to the checkered flag.

Daniel Ricciardo, who was driving Red Bull finished sixth behind Nasr, gaining eight points for the team in the process. Following Daniel was the Force India's Nico Hulkenberg who held on for one of his trademark smooth runs to seventh, while his teammate Sergio Perez survived a collision with Jenson Button to finish tenth.

Marcus Erricson driving for Sauber and Carlos Sainz for Toro Rosso finished eighth and ninth respectively completing the top 10 list. Jenson Button was the last one to finish the race in eleventh and hence he didn't won any point. All the eyes were on Max Verstappen though, who became the youngest starter in F1 history.
