Two starkly different products from two vastly similar motorcycle manufacturers, the Harley Davidson Street 750 and the Royal Enfield Continental GT, have been pitted against each other, even though they are like chalk and cheese. Both are incredible motorcycles in their own rights and do the duties they are supposed to do with finesse, and while we are talking about them, both are stunning motorcycles to look at!!
The Street 750 being the cheapest Harley Davidson on sale in the country (till the Street 500 comes, that is) and the Continental GT being the most expensive Royal Enfield on sale in India, have interestingly a similar sort of a customer base, even though there is a price difference of almost 3 lakhs between the two.
That said, the first round of the fight between these two legacy brands in Indian market has gone to Harley Davidson as its Street 750 has outsold the Continental GT month after month and ended up selling more than the Chennai based firms big bet all through FY 2015. A fitting reply of sorts by the American brand after RE sold more bikes in total through the FY 2015.
Royal Enfield managed to sell 199 units of the Continental GT in March 2015 while Harley Davidson sold 210 units of the Street 750 during the same time. Same story played in last 12 months the Street 750 recorded total sales of 3,029 units while Royal Enfield’s flagship dream could only manage 2,799 units out of its showrooms.
It is just the beginning of the fight that will go a long way and these two legendary manufacturers will cross paths again and again. Royal Enfield targets becoming the world’s best mid-size player and Harley, on a consolidation phase again, is exploring newer developing markets to sustain its dominance!
