Brijmohan Lall Munjal, founder of Hero Group companies and chairman emeritus of India’s largest two-wheeler maker, passed away yesterday. BM Munjal, was an inspiration to millions, he was born at kamalia, Toba Tek Singh district which was then un-divided Punjab, in 1923. BM Munjal started working at the Army Ordnance factory soon after completing his formal education.
Munjal decided to leave home at an early age of 20, and travelled the world in search of markets, technologies and equipment. In 1944, Munjal settled in Amritsar and then Ludhiana, where Hero Cycles laid its foundation. By 1968, Hero Cycles Limited was already the biggest manufacturer of cycles in India and the same year, Hero Cycles Limited made it to Guinness Book of Records for being the largest Indian cycle manufacturer.
Hero came into strategic partnership with Japanese auto maker, Honda Motor Co. in 1984, which then went on as a technical base for Hero to triumph the growing auto mobile industry in India. The venture was called off in 2011 and both the companies partied their ways after 27 years of partnership (the longest in Indian Automobile Industry). Hero then went on to become Hero Motocrop. The separation gave an opportunity for Hero to expand its market globally under the name Hero MotoCorp Ltd.
