Hero MotoCorp remains the undisputed market leader in two-wheeler sales in 2019, as well.
Compared to the previous year, 2019 has seen a consistently reduced sales statistic
Though Hero motorcycle models rank among the top two motorcycle brands in India, the same is not true about the Hero scooters.
Figures do not lie. The year 2019 has not been a particularly good one for the automobile market. Compared to the previous year, there has been a slump in almost every month. Despite the slowdown in the sales figures, Hero MotoCorp continues to lead the pack. Here are the comparative sales figures for Hero two-wheelers from January to November 2019 with its corresponding 2018 statistics.
We have seen the YoY comparison for the entire brand, as such. The year has not been as encouraging as 2018. However, things are brightening up towards the end of the year with the sales picking up again.
Hero MotoCorp is renowned for its motorcycles more than its scooters. Hero motorcycles have always topped the charts when it comes to comparing the sales figures of motorcycles across all brands in India. However, Hero scooters lag in comparison with Honda taking the prime place almost every month. We shall compare the sales performances of Hero scooters with that of the Hero bikes and see where they stand in comparison.
Among the scooters, Destini 125 is the top-selling model in January with the sale of 21,352 units, whereas the Duet brings up the rear with 7,464 units. On the motorcycle front, Hero Splendor is the leading model having sold 223,909 units. HF Deluxe is a close second with sales figures a little below the 2-lakh mark.
Compared to the January sales performance, February 2019 has been a better month for Hero vehicles. The YoY comparison table also shows that February 2019 has been the best (albeit negative return) with the least negative growth of -0.80%. Destini 125 retained the top individual scooter model whereas Splendor consolidated its lead over the second-placed HF Deluxe. The higher specification bikes have never been Hero’s strength in any case. Thus, you do not see bike models like the Karizma or the Xtreme 200R giving an excellent performance.
March 2019 is not much different from February when it comes to individual sales, especially the best-selling models. However, the comparative figures of March 2018 show that March 2019 has been one of the lowest points in the graph with a negative performance of -21.50%. On the individual front, Hero Splendor and Hero HF Deluxe maintain their positions as the No 1 and 2 selling bikes in the country. Destini 125 finds a place in the top-10 scooter list with a sales of 22,564 units. The Maestro and Duet brands have again been among the poorest of performers among the scooters.
The dawn of the new financial year did not bring any change in the fortunes to the two-wheeler sales performances. Hero Splendor and HF Deluxe remained the top two bikes as far as sales figures are concerned. The Hero Destini 125 still maintained its lead over the other Hero scooters but the statistics were no match for the sales figures of the top Hero bikes.
May 2019 saw the Hero HF Deluxe closing the gap between itself and Splendor. Destini 125 managed to beat the rest of the scooters though it was way behind the market leader, Honda Activa. The overall YoY figures were also comparatively better with a negative performance of -7.80% over May 2018. Other bike models such as Passion, Super Splendor, and Glamour had a mini-competition amongst themselves, but Splendor managed to sell nearly 2 lakh bikes in May to remain the market leader.
June 2019 saw the Hero HF Deluxe overtaking the Splendor sales for the first time in many months to become the top-selling bike for the month with a sales figure of 1.93 lakhs. Destini 125, however, remained the most popular scooters of all Hero models. Splendor was a close second with an overall sale of 1.77 lakh units.
Hero Splendor saw a sudden slump in the sales figures for July 2019. However, it still managed to be the No 2 best-selling bike in the market with a sales figure of 1.30 lakhs. The Hero HF Deluxe was the best-selling Hero bike for the month having sold 1.69 lakh units. This month witnessed the effects of the slowdown in the economy with Hero MotoCorp reporting the highest negative YoY growth of -23%. The month also saw a new leader in the scooter segment with Hero Pleasure overtaking the Hero Destini 125 as the top-selling Hero scooter of the month.
August 2019 was also not a very good month for the automobile sector with almost all bike manufacturers reporting massive negative growth. Hero MotoCorp’s performance was no better. However, Hero Splendor roared back with full strength to become the top-selling bike in the country with an overall sales of 1.70 lakh units. HF Deluxe was a close second with a sales performance of 1.61 lakh units. Hero Pleasure managed to break free from Destini 125 and consolidate its overall lead in the Hero scooter segment.
The end of September 2019 saw the revival of the auto industry from the depths to which it had plummeted in July and August. HF Deluxe managed to grab a slender lead over the Splendor model with a sales figure of 1.95 lakh units. Hero Pleasure, in the meanwhile, started making its presence felt by increasing its overall market share over the Destini 125. However, Honda Activa continued to be the best-selling scooter brand in India.
The revival of the auto sector is evident in October as Hero Splendor cross the 2-lakh mark in its sales figures for the first time since April 2019. HF Deluxe also displayed a commendable performance to be a close second. Hero Pleasure consolidated its position at the top of the heap amongst Hero scooters with a sales figure of 16,347 units.
The individual sales figures for November 2019 are not yet available in the market. However, the market is inching its way back. It promises good tidings for the next year. December is the best month of all to purchase bikes because of the excellent discount offers available. These discounts can play a stellar role in pushing up the sales figures substantially.
Things have started to improve, whereby we can expect the market to reverse the trends and start showing positive YoY growth from January 2020 onwards. The auto market has weathered the storm. Now, the only way is to go forward and ensure that it performs to the best of its ability.
