The Japanese automaker is currently readying the next-gen Brio hatchback. And, simultaneously, Honda might also be updating the platform to accommodate an electric vehicle to be based on it. Mr. Jnaneswar Sen, Senior VP, Marketing & Sales, Honda Cars India, has revealed that the company commenced work on the EV strategy for India a while ago. The buzz is that discussions on the type of EV and constructing a battery plant were held at a recent Honda Cars India board meeting. An announcement is on cards anytime soon. Currently, no other automaker besides both the home-grown automakers, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, is retailing electric vehicles in India.

Reliable sources have told us that Honda's Indian arm is yet to zero down on the body style of the electric vehicles that it intends to build. There is lot of brainstorming going on at the company's global headquarters in Japan to chalk out the strategy for India. As for the Japanese and European market, it would launch the Honda Urban EV Concept’s production version in 2019 and 2020 respectively. However, it would not be heading to the Indian shores as the company is in favour of a completely different, low-cost model to begin with to test the customer response. Meanwhile, in other news, Honda's most successful vehicle till date in India, the City sedan, completed a journey of 20 years in the market.
