China and weirdness go hand in hand and so, our title for this piece of news is weird. Honda China has released the images of the new Honda Greiz sedan, which is actually the Honda City, but with redesigned exteriors. Weirdly enough, instead of launching it as the facelifted or next-generation City, Honda has decided to pit it against the City in China.
The good news though, is that Honda will sell the Greiz exclusively in China, and there are no signals that it will be launched in any other market. Chances are that Honda will update the next City on the same lines of the Greiz. And so as you know, Honda Greiz will be manufactured by Dongfeng-Honda, a joint venture between Chinese company Dongfeng and Honda Motors.
Speaking of the design, the Honda Greiz gets a redesigned exterior. One can see a more sculpted bonnet and a newly designed grille. The existing chrome grille will be replaced by a thick glossy slat finished in piano black. The headlight design will remains the same, but there will be an addition of the projector headlamps with LED DRL and LED turn indicator.
On its side, the wheel arches are now more chunkier and there are sharper body lines between the arches. The new alloy wheels and the lines give the Greiz a flowing and sporty look, which has a basic silhouette of the City. On the rear end, there's a set redesigned LED taillight, a wider chrome slat and a redesigned lower bumper.
As much as Honda has tried to differentiate the Greiz with the City from the exteriors, the interiors are exactly similar to the City. In terms of the engine, the Honda Greiz will borrow the power unit from the City, a unit powering most of the Honda’s car. This 1.5-litre iVTEC petrol engine will generate 131 hp and will be mated to a CVT gearbox.
Honda will price the Greiz slightly above the City, though it will be competing against the City. We have our share of doubts, who will eat whose market share. There's no news about Honda updating the City in India, which was launched in late 2013. But given the speed with which Honda updates cars, there's hardly any doubt Honda will update the City soon.
And we have our bet that Honda will take the design cues from the Greiz for the facelift!
