2014 Indian Auto Expo is surely one of the most awaited events of 2014, scheduled to take place in February, where all the automakers will showcase their future products and concepts. Japanese automajor Honda has plans to showcase multiple products at the expo. The company had already announced its plans of unveiling the new generation Honda Jazz and the brio based MPV Mobilio at the event, now a tweet by Indian Auto Expo's official twitter handle claims that Honda's globally successful "the Freed MPV will be shown at the Auto Expo 2014".
With the launch of Honda Amaze, the Japanese auto major had clearly shown its intention to grab a big market share in the fast growing segments. While the Amaze was rolled out in the compact sedan segment, the Vezel and Mobilio MPV will enter the fast growing Compact SUV and entry level MPV segments, respectively. The Freed being a more up-market product will be positioned against the country's top-selling MPV Toyota Innova, while the Mobilio MPV will rival Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Chevrolet Enjoy.
The Freed MPV might feature a de-tuend version of the 2.2-litre diesel mill and the 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol mill. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is the same powering the Honda City. The company might also showcase the Vezel compact SUV at the Expo, though the official confirmation is yet to come out. There are also rumours that Honda might not launch the current generation Freed in India. It will rather be the next generation model that will enter the Indian market by 2016.
Currently Toyota Innova is the top-selling MUV/MOV in India, with over 45 lakh units sold in the Indian market since its launch in 2005. So, it will really be a tough task for Honda to outsell the Innova, which is one of the most trusted vehicles in its segment.
