- Honda India is expected to launch a new hybrid car by 2020.
- The new hybrid model will most likely be a mild-hybrid variant of new-gen Honda City.
- The next-gen Maruti Suzuki India is expected to get a full hybrid variant.
Honda India has confirmed its plans to launch a new hybrid car in the country, media reports suggest. The hybrid model is said to be an electrified version of the next-gen Honda City set to break covers in 2020. While car giants in India are developing electric versions of their popular models to meet the deadline of 2030, Honda is taking baby steps by bringing the hybrid models first.
It was reported earlier that Honda is keen on introducing hybrid variants of Jazz and City with their respective generation change. The plan to launch Honda Jazz hybrid seem to have taken a backseat, albeit Honda City hybrid could be introduced in the coming months.
The India-spec Honda City Hybrid was expected to be a full-hybrid vehicle initially, just like the international version. It appears, Honda is not contemplating brining a mild-hybrid version of the model here to curb pricing. Honda is expected to launch the new-gen Honda City in India sometime next year. The new-gen Honda City will come with a full-hybrid variant in Japanese and other Asian markets. There is yet no confirmation if India will be one of the markets in Asia to get the full-hybrid variant of the new-gen Honda City. However, its arch rival, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is likely to get a full hybrid variant when it takes a leap into the next generation.
Talking of the next-gen Honda Jazz, the international version will receive a full-hybrid and an electric variant. As for the Indian market, the launch of next-generation Honda Jazz seems unlikely with the premium hatchback grappling amid rivals including Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai i20. Currently, Honda offers just a single hybrid model in the country, the Honda Accord Hybrid. With prices for the Accord Hybrid going as high as Rs 43.21 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base trim, it hasn’t tasted much success here.
