The production for Honda Mobilio MPV is likely to begin soon with Honda’s new factory at Tapukara, Rajasthan to begin functioning by March 2014, claims a report by Financial Express newspaper. The MPV might be yours for delivery by as early as April next year.
With the Honda City already showcased and to be launched in January, and the new Jazz to follow soon, the launch of the Honda Mobilio marks the commencement of a very exciting year for Honda. The third generation Honda City will be made at the company’s plant in Greater Noida and will share the engine and gearbox with the Mobilio. The new Jazz, after Mobilio, will possibly be the last all-new launch for Honda in 2014. If you want to check them out, these new cars may find a spot in Honda’s pavilion in the upcoming Auto Expo next year.
The Mobilio measures 4.4 m long and has the platform of the Amaze, only elongated. The interior too also corresponds with the sedan sibling having the same dashboard, switchgear and seats. The vehicle was developed at in Thailand and Japan and was first showcased at the Indonesian motor show this September.
Though the report in the Financial Express newspaper claims that the India-bound Honda Mobilio would feature a 1.2-litre i-vtec petrol engine, we highly doubt the claim. To propel a car of this size and mass, we think Honda will employ its tried and tested 1.5-litre i-vtec petrol mil which does duty in the City sedan as well. The Mobilio which debuted in Indonesia featured the same motor as well. However, we expect considerable portion of sales of the Mobilio to come from the diesel variant which has the 1.5-litre i-dtec diesel engine.
The Mobilio will compete against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Chevrolet Enjoy and soon to be launched Renault Lodgy MPV and is likely to give all of them a tough challenge.
