Honda Cars India, as per media reports, is planning to discontinue Mobilio MPV in the country. Being the Japanese automaker's first MPV offering in India, the Mobilio was launched in July 2014. It is being learnt that Mobilio's ouster would make way for the company's next offering BR-V, which made its first public appearance in the country at the recently concluded 2016 Auto Expo. Moreover, Honda BR-V is expected to priced in the same domain as the Mobilio MPV.
It is reported that Mobilio's production could be temporarily suspended due to gradually deteriorating sales figures. However, at one point, over 3500 units of the MPV were sold monthly but now the numbers are getting lesser with each month passing. For example, Honda managed to sell only 441 units of the MPV in January 2016, while February being the worst with just 226 units. Needless to say, Honda Mobilio is a genuine MPV with adequate space and impeccable mileage, but it is slightly overpriced as compared to its arch rival Maruti Ertiga. However, it is still affordable as compared to the Toyota Innova and Renault Lodgy.
On the contrary, if the speculation of Mobilio being discontinued turns out to be true, then it could well be a blessing in disguise for the company as it would open up a huge space for the BR-V. Though, Honda officials had previously declined that there is no possibility of cannibalization ( BR-V eating Mobilio's sales), but still phasing out Mobilio could be a strategic move to endorse BR-V. Apparently, Honda BR-V would be launched in the country in May 2016. The BR-V received quite an overwhelming response by the public at the 2016 Auto Expo due to its stylish appearance. It would be challenged by the likes of Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, Hyundai Creta and Maruti S-Cross.
