The unicorn was always Honda's best bet at the toughly contested power commuter 150-180cc segment. Launched all those ages ago, unicorn always had an air of simplicity, comfort and sensibility combined with decent power and performance. Who can forget the times when we all went crazy about its monoshock, something that every other bike lacked back in those times.
However, Honda never really could dazzle the sales counter in the 150-180cc segment, and the automotive giant had to face defeat from local manufacturers like Bajaj and TVS while significant blow came from its Japanese rival Yamaha in the form of the FZ series.
At the Auto Expo 2014, we were promised by Honda that a new 160cc bike will be launched before the end of the year, though we all expected and wanted it to be an iteration of the stunning and very interestingly designed CX-01 concept. However, Honda declined tour wishes saying that the new 160cc will not be a production version of the CX-01.
The new launch is a significant model for Honda in this range, as it has the responsibility to save grace for the giant that Honda is. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) has announced that it will have a new announcement to make on December 18th, 2014 and we are sure that it is indeed the launch of the motorcycle which has been spied recently. Following the national launch, the bike will introduced in a phased fashion across the country, including smaller towns and cities, in the coming weeks.
Adopting a fresh design, the CB Unicorn 160 is expected to take the baton from the CB Trigger which, despite being a decent all-rounder, failed to take the game towards the Yamaha FZ series. From previous spyshots, it’s clear that the new 160 cc Honda gets a sharp bikini fairing, plastic cladded fuel tank, a fully digital instrument console, a long seat and a ‘X’ shaped taillight. We expect the engine to produce more power and better performance than the present one doing duty in the Trigger.
