Hyundai recently rolled out the new Elite i20 and also cleared its intentions to launch the magnum-opus ix25 compact SUV in the country next year. But, surprisingly, on the roads of Chennai, our friends at Indian Autos Blog have captured a Elite i20 based crossover as a test mule with heavy camouflage. The spied test mule had all the elements of a sporty crossover as it flaunted roof rails, new alloys and side body cladding.
Hyundai, taking a leaf out of its contemporaries Toyota & Fiat's book, is now eyeing the hatchback-turned-crossover segment with an Elite i20 based crossover. We already have Volkswagen Cross Polo, Toyota Etios Cross and Fiat Avventura and they have been doing well in sales numbers, at least from their hatchback counter-part. Hence, Hyundai is contemplating such a crossover and it might position it as the top-end variant of the i20 family and it could turn out to be the highest earning one! Going by the spy-shot we have, the front and rear bumpers are also heavily disguised but the company might tweak them in order to distinguish from the existing hatchback.
The Elite Crossover is expected to borrow the engine sources from the sibling hatchback - The Elite i20. The crossover, similar to the hatchback, is believed to come out in both petrol and diesel avatars with 1.2L petrol motor and 1.4L diesel motor, respectively. The petrol engine would be paired to a 5-speed manual transmission, while the diesel engine would use a 6-speed manual gearbox. As the first spy-shot of the crossover has just emerged, hence it is quite difficult to say when it would actually launch in the country, but we do look forward to know more about it in the coming weeks. The price can be expected in domain of Rs. 6.5-8 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom).
