Hyundai India Likely to Launch a New Entry-Level Hatchback

Snapshot: Hyundai India is expected to launch a new small car based on the new Santro. The low-cost Santro could miss out on some features to cut down on pricing.

  • The new entry-level car will be positioned below Santro in terms of pricing.
  • It might miss out on several features and dual tone interior theme.
  • Visually, the new small car will look largely same as Santro.

Hyundai India is contemplating launching a stripped-down version of Santro, which it recently resurrected for the Indian market. The low-cost Santro will be positioned below its donor model in terms of price. At this pricing, the A segment hatch will aim at customers upgrading from two-wheelers to four wheelers. With this, Hyundai will have a new model in the A segment, where it is currently absent after the phase out of Eon last year.

Hyundai Santro, which was Hyundai’s safe bet in the entry-level space, has now been pushed to the B segment with a generation change. In a bid to fill the vacuum created by discontinuing Eon, Hyundai is planning to come up with an entry-level hatchback to lure first-time car buyers. The cumulative sales of entry-level hatchbacks for FY2019 stood at 4,70,482 (sales of select models) which testifies popularity of A segment hatchbacks in India.

By bringing in a low-cost Santro would also save Hyundai from investing a hefty amount on an all-new model which also adheres to the strict BS VI emission norms set to kick in from April next year. The entry-level segment is dominated by Maruti Suzuki Alto that is priced much below Hyundai Santro which starts at Rs 3.90 lakh (ex-showroom).

As for the low-cost Santro, Hyundai could skip some of the features to bring down its pricing. The base variant in Santro’s line-up already misses out on an air conditioner, hence it remains to be seen what features will Hyundai skim from Santro to fit it in the A segment. While the low-cost Santro might miss out on the beige black dual tone, it is likely to retain the new design and the cascading grille in front.
