Korean automaker Hyundai is flexing its muscles to expand its foothold in India over the next two years. And what better way to achieve that, if not by foraying in the highly lucrative compact SUV segment? After the spy photographers snagged the all-new Hyundai ix25 in China and South Korea, the test mule was recently spotted doing test rounds in India. And now, according to industry sources it is understood that Hyundai has scheduled the new ix25 SUV to launch in the country sometime by mid-2015.
From the spy images, it is pretty evident that stance-wise, the ix25 sits squarely between the its two big rivals, the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster SUV. The sub-compact SUV is expected to borrow design cues from its bigger sibling, the Santa Fe, while the model is also likely to feature the wrap-around headlamp assembly and the front grille seen on the Elite i20.
Expect the interiors to be upmarket and to have a more premium feel than the Elite i20. And of course, being a Hyundai branded car we can expect to see a number of segment-first features in the new SUV. Powering the Hyundai ix25 in India, could be the 1.6-litre engine from the Verna, instead of the ones used in the Elite i20.
The Hyundai ix25, which debuted in the concept form at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show is slated to launch in the Chinese car market on October 9. The compact SUV will be manufactured in China by the Beijing-Hyundai joint venture.
Apart from the ix25, Hyundai is also preparing to roll out their Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Honda Mobilio competitor, which is expected to be ready by 2016.
