If you felt that the Hyundai Elite i20 with its current engine options was not impressive enough. Hyundai may just be able to impress you with its next move. The company is testing a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that it first revealed at the Paris motor show in 2014. Hyundai may reveal the i20 with the latest turbo petrol engine at the Frankfurt motor show in September this year. The car is expected to go on-sale internationally in the following year.
The newly developed unit is believed to have been derived from the existing 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder unit that’s found in the European i10. The unit would use a direct injection system with a single-scroll (constant pressure) turbocharger. The engine is expected to produce 120PS of power and 172.2Nm of torque. The downsizing is seen as a strategy inline with current industry trend where most of the manufacturers are developing more frugal engines.
Pictures of a camouflaged prototype that surfaced on the internet also carried a new styled front bumper which is expected to be part of mid-life update. In India, the new engine may be offered when the car receives a mid-life facelift. It is also believed that the company is working on a performance oriented i20 which it would launch with its N performance badge in the year 2017. However, it is not clear at the moment if this car will be offered in India.
