Now when the 2014 India Bike Week, the 'Woodstock of Biking Festivals' is just few days away, we spoke to Martin da Costa, CEO of 70 EMG about everything that makes the 2014 IBW 'Bigger, Badder and Better' than ever before.
Q: We have been hearing a lot of good things about 2014 India Bike Week. What makes it 'bigger, badder and better' than ever?
To be honest, we have put in a lot more energy and efforts this year to make it a bigger event. We have almost doubled the number of machines, metals and displays. We have added a lot of things this year like Burn Out Stage, three music stages featuring over 20 bands and JDs including Dualist Inquity, Anish Sood and many others to make it louder and better than before. We have revamped the famous Biker Build Off by including a new Chopper Class which has excited people from around the world to attend India Bike Week this year. So, we have made this year's event a world class. Also, we have built the special Brotherhood Zone inside the walls of IBW, where hundreds of Indian Motorbike Clubs and thousands of Bikers can park their bikes, chill and hand out with each other. Then at the Ladakh Tent there, there will be workshops, bars, biker BBQ's and the chance to meet and interact with world famous biking legends Ted Simons, Nick Sanders, Sam Childers and other world biking heroes. So, I think it's better designed festival this year which makes it bigger and better than before.
Q: This time you have introduced a new chopper class to your customising bike build-off competition, what is this new category about?
This year the Bike Build-Off competition will have two categories: Chopper Class (hardtails, bobbers, low-riders, diggers, etc.), and Open Class (cafe racers, scramblers, boardtrack racers, motocross, enduros, sports bikes etc.) We wanted to classify it better this year, so that for Vijay Singh from Rajputana Customs who won the Build-Off title last year, the chopper class will be a fair title to defend. We have invited two new bike modifiers in this class to compete with him for the title this year. So, there is a right category for everyone in the build-off competition at the 2014 IBW.
Q: Apart from the Indian debut of the Harley Davidson Street 750, what will be the most inviting event at this year's IBW?
Other than the Indian debut of the brand new HD 750 Street, there will be lot many never-seen-before machines coming to this year's IBW including the 'Radial Chopper’ that has World War II fighter-plane type engine fitted into it. The new 'Century Class' at the IBW Bike Concours will have several 100 years old bikes. For me personally, bike builders are the high points this year, because it shows how brilliant and creative Indian customizers are becoming. Then there are three music stages where bands from all around the world are going to perform. So, there's so much happening this year, which is exciting people all over the country to attend 2014 IBW.
Q: What can we expect at newly introduced Zippo bar and IBW Beerbulance?
To make sure that there's fun all around at the event and there's no less food and drink, we have introduced a lot of new things this year including Zippo bar and IBW Beerbulance. There's also the Biker-BBQ Grills where you can choose any piece of chicken or meat and then grill it the way you want.
Q: As the registration for IBW 2014 have been commenced, what is your expectation on response this time, compared to the previous year?
Last year, we saw over 6,500 people at the event, so if 7000-8000 people visit this year, I'll be very happy. In the first edition, we had been successful inviting bikers and biking enthusiasts from all over the country, and if we can maintain that, that will be a huge success for us.
