The difference between high-end luxury cars and premium cars is reducing day-by-day and every luxury car manufacturer is thriving hard to achieve this goal. So did the German bigwig, BMW, who launched their X1 compact SUV, also the cheapest from the brand to reduce the gap. And now they are ready with the second generation of the X1 and a recent spy shots revealed the design of the 2016 BMW X1.
The prototype caught testing was semi-camouflaged and hence the X1's design became evident. The headlight and taillight design seems the coming of age design with a prominent front grille, sloping roofline, spoilers and dual exhaust pipes. The design is more conventional now, as against the current generation model, which always gave the impression of a more radical design.
The compact SUV will be based on the UKL1 platform which is already doing rounds on the 2-series Active Tourer. This also means that the X1 will have a standard front-wheel drive and can get an optional xDrive all-wheel drive system for some extra bucks. The SUV, which is essentially a crossover seems tad shorter than the current model.
Not much details are revealed about the engines, but a possible transverse engine layout can be opted to provide better and roomier interior. Other than that, the engine will be sourced from the aforementioned 2-series Active Tourer. The X1 will remain the entry level crossover model for the company for the coming years too.
The expected launch date of the car could very well be in the second half of the 2015 and the India launch could follow soon.
