Mitsubishi is working on the third-generation of the Pajero Sport SUV and it has been spied testing for the very first time in Australia by the folks at GoAuto. The Triton-based SUV, as reported by the media in Thailand, would be launched in their country around Q3 2015, with India launch happening sometime in 2016. Being known as Mitsubishi Challenger in Australia, the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport takes its designing cues from the GR-HEV utility concept.
Although, in the spy-pics, as one can see the next-gen Pajero Sport is heavily camouflaged but it still gives a basic idea of how the SUV is going to look. Adorning the GR-HEV utility concept's design, sleeker swept-back headlamps, similar bumper design and a strong character line running across the side profile can be noticed. Currently, Mitsubishi Motor assembles the Pajero Sport at Hindustan Motors’ Tiruvallur plant from Thai-kits and with the next-gen Pajero Sport, this process may continue. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is one of the India's popular off-roader and challenges the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra SsangYong Rexton and Isuzu MU-7.
Under the hood, the current-generation Pajero Sport has a 2.5L, 4-cylinder turbo diesel motor which also used to do duties to the discontinued Triton pick-up. It generates a maximum power of 176bhp at 4000 rpm and peak torque of 400 Nm at 2500 rpm. However, the next-gen 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport could in-house the new 2.4L MIVEC turbo-diesel engine which is also offered with the new Triton. This engine produces a maximum power of 179bhp and peak torque of 430 Nm with the new Triton pickup. The company could link this engine to both the 6-speed manual gearbox and 6-speed automatic transmission for the 2016 Pajero Sport.
