Amidst the growing call to increase the safety standards in the Indian vehicles and add better safety equipments, Toyota has set an exemplary example. The recently unveiled Toyota Innova Crysta at the 2016 Auto Expo has earned a 4-star crash test rating at the ASEAN NCAP. And not only this, the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) equipped Innova Crysta gets a full 5-star rating!
The ASEAN-spec Innova by Toyota will be known as the Toyota Innova Crysta in India and was first unveiled for the global markets in Indonesia. The 2016 Innova in Indonesia doesn't get ESC as standard and gets 4 star. But the ESC equipped models, which also gets Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), gets a 5 star rating after scoring 14.10 points out of maximum 16.00 points.
About the 4-star rated Innova, the MPV gets a Child Occupant Protection (COP), which is marked at 76% helping the Innova get 4-star crash test rating. As for the India bound model is concerned, we are not so sure what safety features will make their way to the India. The Innova Crysta model showcased at the Auto Expo 2016 listed airbags, ABS, EBD and Brake Assist as safety features, and no AOP, ESC and COP was mentioned for the 'Z' trim.
Speaking about the new Innova, Toyota has given a much needed facelift to the Crysta, both on the outside and inside the cabin. The outside of the Innova gets much angular looking projector headlights and dual chrome slats on the grille. While the basic silhouette remains the same, a new set of 17-inch alloys and flattish rear end makes it an interesting looking MPV.
The biggest changes are made inside the cabin with both design change and equipment addition. The new Toyota Innova Crysta gets a smart entry system with push button start stop, auto close for tailgate, cruise control, and 7-inch infotainment system with satellite navigation. Then there are seven airbags, ABS, EBD on the safety front.
In terms of the engine, the 2016 Toyota Innova Crysta will most likely be powered by a 2.4-litre GD diesel engine that produces 149 PS of power and 342 Nm of torque. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. There's also a 6 speed automatic gearbox that will produce 360 Nm of torque. With the 2.0-litre diesel engine ban underway in Delhi, Toyota can most likely introduce a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 139 PS and 183 Nm of torque.
Certain reports indicate that the unofficial bookings for the new Innova have started for an amount of Rs 50000. Toyota Innova Crysta is expected to launch in the mid 2016 at a price range from Rs 10 Lakh - Rs 18 Lakh.
