India has overtaken Indonesia and Vietnam to become Honda's largest two wheeler market as informed by Keita Muramatsu, President & CEO of HMSI. Known as the Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), they credit gearless scooter Activa for their success. Honda Activa is the largest selling two wheeler of India accounting almost 200000 units in august.
" We have expanded our range in the mass 100-110 cc bike segment with the Dream range and while the segment’s share in total two wheeler sales has fallen from 49% in 2012 to 47%, our sales have grown. But the rural market is challenging and we are working hard.” said YS Guleria, VP for sales & marketing.
Currently, all the production of HMSI is done at three plants in Haryana, Rajasthan and Karnataka. HMSI has an annual production capacity of 4.5 million units. They are planning to start 2 more plants to cater the increasing demand of 2 wheelers. Current portfolio of HMSI includes:
Gearless scooters like Activa, Dio, Aviator
Commuter bikes like CB Shine, CB Trigger, CB Twister, CB Yuga
and Sports bikes including mostly CBR series.
Launched in 2001, Honda Activa became the hottest selling gearless scooter in India and in 2013, it overtook Hero Splendor in sales. Available in 110cc and 125 cc variants, Activa promises fuel efficiency of 60-65kmpl. Other than Activa, CBR is also their one of the best selling sports bike.
Keita Muramatsu said, "160cc bike will be introduced in October-December this year to challenge Bajaj’s Pulsar and TVS Apache." Adding to the statement, he said, “We have been growing very fast and right now the demand is higher than we can produce. Within a few years we have moved from the fourth position in India’s two wheeler industry to the second."
