Mercedes-Benz, joining in the 'Make-in-India' campaign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has doubled its production capacity to 20,000 units per year at its Chakan, Pune facility. The German luxury automaker has invested over Rs. 1000 crore for this cause. The company, alongside the inauguration of its phase 2 production facility, also rolled out the locally-assembled GLA CLass, now priced at Rs. 31.31 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune) and it would be manufactured at the Chakan plant from now on.
Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister, Maharashtra inaugurated the new production facility along with Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister, Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Subhash Desai, Industry Minister, Maharashtra. In addition, several people from Mercedes-Benz top brass were present on this occasion, including Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India and Piyush Arora, Executive Director, Operations, Mercedes-Benz India. Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class was launched around nine months back in two variants in diesel trim - GLA 200 CDI Style & GLA 200 CDI Sport with sticker prices being Rs. 32.75 Lakhs & 36.90 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi), respectively. Hence, the localiztion of the SUV has made it cheaper by Rs. 1.5-2.5 Lakhs in the country.

Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class diesel variants are powered by a 2.1L, 4-cylinder turbocharged direct injection inline engine which pumps out a maximum power of 136bhp and peak torque of 300Nm. It is paired with a 7-speed ducal clutch automatic transmission, which propels it touch the 100kmph mark in just 9.9 seconds from standstill. It has an electronically limited top speed of 205kmph, while delivering a best-in-segment mileage of 17.9kmph. The petrol variant GLA 200 Sport won't be locally manufactured as of now.
