Hyundai India has been testing the Elite i20 based crossover relentlessly on the Indian roads for the past 3-4 months. It has been spied several times and as it is approaching its launch date - March 9, 2015 (Tentative) - it has started sheding the camouflage. Recently, our friends at Motor Vikatan have captured the i20 Crossover in a new paint shade in the outskirts of Chennai.
Going by the spy-shots, it seems to be the entry-level variant of the i20 based crossover as the alloys were relatively smaller than seen on the previously spied versions. It also didn't feature mirror mounted turn indicators, which are supposed to be on offer with mid-level trims and onwards. However, it had better ground clearance than the i20 hatchback along with sporty exteriors such as extra body cladding, silver roof rails and an all-new paint shade. Since, its a crossover and hence, the company has worked on its ground clearance to ensure it can endure the bad roads. There have been several media reports claiming that Hyundai i20 crossover would be priced around Rs. 50000-75000 more than the range-topping i20 hatchback trim.
Under the hood, the crossover is expected to share its engine and transmission options with the i20 hatchback. The petrol variants would be powered by a 1.2L VTVT motor, which is good enough for 82 bhp of power. On the other hand, the diesel variants would in-house the 1.4L U2 motor which would rake in a maximum power of 88.7 bhp. The petrol engine would be coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission, while a 6-speed manual transmission would do duties to the diesel variants. The company hasn't disclosed the exact launch date, but it's been almost confirmed that it would be launched in the month of March around the festival of Holi. Hyundai Elite i20 Cross would take on the likes of Fiat Avventura, Toyota Etios Cross and Volkswagen CrossPolo.
