The two-day Fifteenth Vintage and a rally of Classic Car started in Jaipur on 2nd and 3rd of March. The venue of event was Hotel Jai Mahal Palace; three organizers jointly organized the rally. These are:
- Rajasthan Tourism
- RASCC (Rajputana Automotive Sports Car Club)
- “Audi India” along with its branch in Jaipur.
The ‘Rajputana Automotive Sports Car Club’ started organizing the rally regularly from 1996 when there were only fourteen cars. Seventeen years latter a total of 114 old beauties cars took part in the rally. The rally has become an annual feature in the diary of all vintage car lovers. This year the event also showcased some new models from Audi including an Audi R8 sports car and an “Audi 100” made especially for the cricketer Shastri for his excellent work in the World Cup 1985. Some of us still remember the victory lap round Ravi Shastri took with other members of the team, hanging on for their dear lives from the car.
Parameters for inclusion were:
- “Most Original”
- “Most Rare”
- “Most Oldest”
This year another attraction was the cars in vintage category cars used by former Royalty of India, the erstwhile Maharajas and Maharanis. The club started this event 17 years back in 1996 with only 14 vintage cars. The rally included:
- “1933 Dodge”, Ruler of Karoli owned this car .
- “1939 Mercedes” original owner former Ruler of Ayodhya
- “1940 Chevrolet” Ruler of Bikaner owned it originally.
- Raj Mata Gaytri Devi, owned the “1968 Humber Hawk, displayed in the Rally.
- The First car with air conditioner car “1941 Packard” with its Air Conditioner still in use.
All the old cars were in perfect condition and showed the love and care the owners lavished on them to keep in perfect conditions. The restoration of old cars needs knowledge and understanding of the old engines, special love and care that goes in taking care of these old and beautiful cars.
Some of the old cars displayed in the rally have even been used for shooting of a number of movies including the famous movie “Gandhi” and commercials. Watching cruising majestically on the Jaipur roads was a treat for all car enthusiasts
