Last year, the American SUV manufacturer Jeep unveiled the Renegade to address the lower segment where it lacked any presence. Now to enhance its lower portfolio, Jeep is working on a new SUV which will go head to head with Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster, Hyundai Creta and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. This SUV may be unveiled next year either in Brazil or in India.

The upcoming Jeep is codenamed as Jeep MG or Jeep 526, and would be based on FCA’s new X6H platform. This is a matured version of the 326 architecture that is being used in many Fiat cars. According to the head of Jeep brand Mike Manley, the compact SUV is a viable business option for the brand which would help it to have a bigger piece of pie of the market.

The SUV would be unveiled next year, and is expected to retain the boxy looks of the Renegade. It would be manufactured in the Fiat’s plant in Brazil, and be sold initially in South American markets.

The brand recently showed its all new Jeep Compass SUV, which is all set to replace the Compass and the Patriot. The SUV is set to launch by the second quarter of 2017 in India.

Competitors:

In India, the upcoming Jeep’s SUV would face a stiff competition from as the rivals. The Ford Ecosport, which would be the top competitor, rules the Indian compact SUV market as of now. The Ecosport comes in a number of engine choices like 1.5 TDCI diesel, 1.5 liter petrol and 1.0 liter Ecoboost petrol, which churn out impressive 98.59 bhp, 110.4 bhp and 124.24 bhp of power respectively. However,  the Ecosport lacks an all wheel drive option.

The South Korean Hyundai Creta has the option of 1.4liter CRDI diesel and 1.6liter VTVT petrol engine, which produces 88.7 bhp and 121.3 bhp power respectively. Just like the Ecosport, the Creta also lacks an all wheel drive system which sadly makes it a soft roader. India’s favourite manufacturer Maruti Suzuki also has a compact SUV named the Grand Vitara which comes with a 1.3 liter Fiat sourced diesel engine which produces a power output of 88.5bhp. The Duster is the oldest SUV in this lot which comes with a 1598cc petrol engine which produces 102.53bhp and two variants of 1461cc diesel engine which produce 102.53bhp, 83.8bhp and 108.45bhp respectively. Duster is the only SUV in this lot which is equipped with All wheel drive system.
