- Fiat's new 7-seater SUV for India will launch in 2021.
- Jeep 598 will have nothing in common with Compass except the platform.
- The company could also launch a plug-in-hybrid petrol variant.
Fiat India's new 7-seater Jeep SUV (codenamed as Jeep 598), purportedly also called Jeep Grand Compass, has been spotted as a test mule for the first time by the folks at Auto Esporte. It was spied testing in Brazil and contrary to all the market buzz and speculations which stated that it will be stretched version of Jeep Compass with an elongated wheelbase, it will be an all-new product. It will be launched in the Indian market in 2021, after the debut of Jeep Compass Facelift.
The India-spec model of Jeep's new 7-seater SUV has been called 'Jeep Low D 3-row' in the past. However, it is still in the early stages of development but sources have confirmed that it will have an entirely different name and not use 'Jeep Compass XL', 'Jeep Grand Compass' or anything else on similar lines.
The only similarity that both the SUVs will have is the architecture. Even the suspension system and steering gears will be poles apart. The Compass has a wheelbase of 2630mm while the Jeep 598 will boast of a 2800mm long wheelbase.
The company could have also introduced the China-spec Jeep Grand Commander in the emerging markets such as India and Brazil. But since the Grand Commander is based on Jeep Cherokee KL which underpins the CUSW (Compact U.S. Wide) platform, it has made it too expensive for the Indian and Brazilian markets.
Mechanically, the 7-seater Jeep 598 will be powered by the 1.3L FireFly Turbo petrol engine and a 2.0L MultiJet II diesel engine. The petrol engine could be linked to a 6-speed manual or a CVT gearbox while the diesel mill could make use of either a 9-speed AT or a 6-speed MT. An all-wheel-drive system would be available as an option.
