India’s Karun Chandhok and Brazil’s Bruno Senna have been picked as the official drivers by Mahindra Racing to compete in the first-ever FIA Formula E Racing Championship that is slated to get underway later this year. Chandhok and Senna will be team-mates for the third time now, after having driven for the same outfit in GP2 Series and subsequently, Formula One.
The FIA Formula E Championship is a new class of open-wheel auto racing with cars powered by electric motors. The series was conceived in 2012 and inaugural championship is scheduled to get underway on September 20, 2014 in Beijing. The series will cover 10 racetracks across the world. For the first season, all the cars competing in the series will be identical - though from the second season onwards, automakers will be allowed to develop their own cars. In the debut season, the teams have been provided with the Spark-Renault SRT-01E powered by an MGU engine, supplied by McLaren. This engine is able to churn out 270PS of max power, while the 0 to 100 kmph mark is reached in mere 3.0 seconds.
The Indian automaker had unveiled their Formula E car at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show in red and white livery, which has now been replaced with black along with the Indian tricolour. The Mahindra Racing team will be headed by Team Prinicipal Dilbagh Gill, while the running of it will left to the highly experienced Carlin Motorsport.
Commenting on the new driver line-up, S P Shukla, chairman of Mahindra Racing said, “Both Karun and Brunno come with very strong pedigree and have successfully competed in a variety of racing series over the past few years. The entire team looks forward to working with both f them to optimise the performance of our racing car over the next few months of testing before the start of racing in September this year.”
