Kia Motors Corporation is planning to develop an affordable EV for India in partnership with Hyundai Motors and seeks personal utilization of electric vehicles to be included for support from government under the FAME II initiative in India, as per a senior Kia official.
Kia is a part of the Hyundai Motor Group, which are compatriot organizations of South Korea. Kia Motors aims to launch the low-cost electric vehicle as a separate project and shall launch its upcoming Seltos SUV along with 3 new models in the next 2 years in India.
According to Han-Woo Park, President, and CEO of Kia Motors Corporation, the development of a low-cost electric vehicle is still in the works and how is the question. He is thinking of developing the EV for India in association with Hyundai.
Last year, Kia Motors had announced at the 2018 Auto Expo that it has plans to bring a varied range of vehicles to India. That includes an India-specific compact EV to launch between 2019 and 2021.
Mr Park further stated that the company already possesses a portfolio including electric vehicle, fuel cell vehicles, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles that are available in the international market.
He suggested that Kia is ready to launch the EV car in India however, it depends on the government’s support pro-EV policies and infrastructure support. When the Indian market is ready with opportunities, Kia Motors will bring the EV anytime to India.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Hyundai is preparing to launch its Kona electric SUV in India in July.
Mr Park added that currently, the cost of an electric vehicle is too high specifically in the context of the Indian market and without the support of the government it will be a major challenge to sell electric vehicles in India.
