- China to be the first market to receive the Kia Seltos EV, expected launch in end-2020.
- The Seltos EV could be the first EV sold by Kia in India.
- The Kia Seltos EV could be priced in the range of INR 22-26 lakh (ex-showroom) in India.
Under pressure from the domestic and international environmental regulations, all the mainstream auto manufacturers have stepped into the world of electric vehicles. Now Kia has started developing a pure electric version of the Seltos, suggests a report published by the S.Korean blog, ETnews.com.
Codenamed ‘Kia SP2 EV’, the pure-electric Seltos EV is still good 8-9 months away from its series production which will begin in August 2020. While the development of its prototype has already commenced at the full pace, it won’t be long that the same will start making public appearances in the test form, soon in the future.
For the uninitiated, Kia already has a pure electric SUV in its portfolio, the Niro EV. The Seltos EV will be placed below the former in Kia’s international line-up.
The source report suggests that the company has set a mass production target of 10,000 units, but it is not yet known whether the source is mentioning the global numbers or not. Though the development of the Seltos EV project isn’t exactly in the early stage, yet deeper details are still not clear at the moment. What’s certain is that China will be the first international market to get the Seltos EV. The launch of the same can be expected sometime in late 2020.
Another piece of interesting information to be taken away from the report is that the Kia Seltos EV will source its battery packs and electric motor from the Hyundai Kona Electric. For the record, the Hyundai Kona was launched in the Indian market a few months back. It uses a 39.2 kWh battery which transmits power to an electric motor which delivers a power output of 136 bhp and 395 Nm of peak torque.
The Hyundai Kona Electric delivers an ARAI-certified full-charge driving range of 452 km. It is capable of doing 0-100 km/h in 9.7 seconds. For reference, MG ZS EV claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 8.5 seconds, while the Tata Nexon EV claims 9.9 seconds of a 0-100 km/h sprint time. With the same battery and motor configuration, expect similar range and performance figures from the Kia Seltos EV as well.
The Kia Seltos EV could very well be the first EV sold by Kia in India. If such is the case, expect it to be priced in the range of INR 22-26 lakh (ex-showroom).
