Ending the speculation, Ferrari has mentioned in a brief statement that it will retain its driver Kimi Raikkonen as one of its driver for the next season of Formula one. The renewed agreement with the driver keeps the line-up unchanged who will continue as Sebastian Vettel’s team mate in 2016.
Raikkonen mentioned "What can I say. For me, to be able to stay another year at Ferrari means that the dream goes on. The Scuderia is my family, as I always said, it's here I want to end my career. I am more committed than ever and I want to say thank you to the people who gave me this chance. Also, a big thank you goes to all my Ferrari fans, for their continuous support."
Team principal, Maurizio Arrivabene added "We believe that extending Kimi's contract into the next season will provide further stability to the team. This has been our guideline, also considering the very good relationship between Kimi and Seb. On our side, this shows our great confidence in him, and I expect this confidence to be well rewarded."
Raikkonen left Ferrari and the Formula One sport after the end of 2010 season, after which Ferrari replaced the Finnish driver with Fernando Alonso. Raikkonen tasted nine of his twenty F1 victories with the Ferrari between 2007 and 2009 and won World Drivers' Championship title with in 2007.
Raikkonen returned to the sport in the year 2012, however, this time with Lotus F1 team. He returned to the red again in the year 2014 and in the same year his team mate, Alonso dominated him by scoring 161 points (Raikkonen scored 55). At the end of 2015 Belgian Grand Prix, his team mate Vettel stands ahead of him who has scored 160 points, while Raikkonen has 82.
The renewed contract also ends the speculation in which the Williams driver, Valtteri Bottas, was considered Raikkonen’s replacement.
